Rhode Island Tattoo Laws

The smallest state in the union has a unique provision in its regulations. The state generally prohibits the tattooing of any person. There can be a prison sentence up to one year, a fine of $300 or both. The Rhode Island law does allow the tattooing for medical purposes, i.e., birth marks, scars, etc. The statute also states that nothing in the bill “Shall be construed as prohibiting the removal of tattoo markings from the body of any person of whatsoever age.” Thus, a minor cannot get a tattoo, even with parental consent, unless there is a medical reason, but an existing tattoo can be removed.
